October is here with lots of jazz

Bobby Dean Blackburn's sons visit frequently to play with Dad. Here is Brooke on guitar and Cory drums.

Here's my column in October Mosaic

Although much of the busy jazz summer is over, there are still several opportunities to listen to our favourites. You can catch one of them, Bobby Dean Blackburn, in three different locations in October.

Tapas and Jazz cotinues at Cobble Beach Sweetwater Restaurant, Owen Sound, on Friday, October 3, with Bobby Dean on keyboard and son Brooke Blackburn on guitar entertaining diners from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. Dinner reservations 519-370-2173.

Also playing for diners at Sweetwater Restaurant are Parsons & Brown on Friday, October 10 and Charlie Bell Trio on Friday, October 17.

Bobby Dean's Trio (Bobby on keyboard, Hart Richardson trumpet and Frank deMatteis drums) are regular performers at Tamarac Island Inn, every Sunday afternoon from 3:00 p.m to 7:00 p.m. Dinner reservations 519-592-5810

This busy musician winds up the month with a Hallowe'en treat for us on Friday, October 31. Bobby Dean's Trio is entertaining for this month's Saugeen Shores Dinner Jazz at Jangles, Port Elgin, beginning at 6:00 p.m. Sounds like a jam; all musicians are welcome to join in the fun if they bring their instruments and music. Advance purchase of passes are recommended. Call 519-832-6362 or 519-797-9945. And for dinner reservations call 519-797-9945.

Stardust Big Band plays for dancers at the 20th Annual Teddy Bear Dream Auction and Dance, Knights of Columbus Hall, Goderich, on Saturday, October 4, from 9:00 p.m. 'till midnight.

A celebration of the music of Ray Charles is happening on Friday, October 17 at Victoria Jubilee Hall, Walkerton, at 8:00 p.m. The evening tribute to the renowned song writer and performer includes hit hit songs featuring vocalists John Mays and Shakura S'Aida with an all star band. More info and tickets 519-881-2826.

Dancers continue to take to the floor to the music of The Chantry Centenairs Swing Band at Chantry Centre, 36 Grey St. S, Southampton. This nine piece swing band plays for listeners as well as dancers on Saturday, October 11 from 8:00 p.m. to 10:30 p.m.

Rhythm & Pews returns this year with a special Christmas and Gospel concert at Owen Sound's, Central Westside United Church. Old favourites, Rob Gasidlo, keyboard and Don Buchanan, sax are joined by songstress Shelaugh Hart, a familiar visitor based in Barrie. Acoustics in the church are fantastic and I'm told the sound system is top notch. Mark your calendar for Sunday, November 23 and enjoy these excellent jazz musicians swing you into the Christmas season from 2:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. Tickets $15. More info 519-376-8319 www.centralwestside.ca

Looking ahead to New Year's Eve, there's a star-studded jazz cast performing at Sweetwater Restaurant, Owen Sound. I'm told the musicians include Rob Gasidlo on keyboard, Don Buchanan, sax, Tyler Wagler, bass, Bruce Caqmpbell, drums, with Nura (Diana Wood) providing vocals. Sounds like a blast!
